Five years in business!

When you walk into otis & clementine’s and look around, you see a community gathering place. Kids and families spend lazy afternoons, young adults gather to socialize or study. Business people meet over coffee. Everyone is welcome to do their thing: dogs are given treats, nursing moms find a comfortable chair, we are a safe space for LGBT youth.
I see young kids opening up books and starting to read them and not being able to put the book down. It is a healthy habit, considering the alternatives kids are exposed to in the world, to learn to love books. Book clubs, Spanish classes, friends meeting friends. It is a true community gathering place, and a family-friendly one, something much needed in this world today.
It’s healthy for communities to have a common “third space”, but it is not a very profitable business model. They say ‘no one ever got rich retailing books’. Our goal has never been to get rich. But we feel rich in many ways. We have a wealth of caring, loyal customers, business partners, and the most scenic ‘backyard’ in Peggy’s Cove Road that anyone could ask for.
There are elements of the small used bookstore that remain sentimental, endearing, and even practical. Books are not going away. Five years in business has proven that. Thank you for your support.
